We have prepared a glossary of common terms for your convenience. These terms have been extracted from various sources. Just click on the alphabet of the term you are looking for to find the definition.

We shall be updating these terms from time to time so please visit us to get the latest updates.

You will find at the end of the definition there will be an abbreviation within bracket. This indicates the source of that definition. At times a single term may have different definition from different sources. We have included it for your benefits.

Below is the meaning for each abbreviation:

Crisis Communication Plan

Detail of how your organization plans to communicate with employees, local authorities, customers and others parties during and after an incident. (BKI)

Crisis Management

The process by which an organisation manages the wider impact of a business continuity E/I/C until it is either under control or contained without impact to the organisation or the BCP is invoked as a part of the Crisis Management process. (BCI)


The overall coordination of an organisation’s response to crisis, in an effective, timely manner, with the goal of avoiding or minimizing damage to the organisation’s profitability, reputation, or ability to operate. (DRII)


Intervention and coordination by individuals or teams before, during and after an event to resolve the crisis, minimize loss, and otherwise protect the organization. (ASIS)

Crisis Management Plan

A clearly defined and documented plan of action for use at the time of a crisis. Typically a plan will cover all the key personnel, resources, services and actions required to implement and mange the Crisis Management process. (BCI)

Crisis Management Team

A crisis management team will consist of key executives as well as key role players (i.e. media representative, legal counsel, facilities manager, disaster recovery coordinator, etc.) and the appropriate business owners of critical organization functions. (DRII / DRJ )


A defined number of roles and responsibilities for implementing the organization’s Crisis Management Plan. (BCI)


A group directed by senior management or its representatives to lead incident / event response comprised of personnel from such functions as human resources, information technology facilities, security, legal, communication / media relations, manufacturing, warehousing, and other business critical support functions. (ASIS)


Crisis Management Team or CMT consists of key executives, essential key supporting players and the heads of business with critical functions. Each member has a set of pre-defined roles and responsibilities for implementing the Crisis Management Plan.
This team decides and approve the activation of the crisis management or BC plan. (BCMI)

Crisis Simulation

The process of testing an organisation’s ability to respond to a crisis in a coordinated, timely, and effective manner, by stimulating the occurrence of a specific crisis. (DRII)

Critical Infrastructure

Systems whose incapacity or destruction would have a debilitating impact on the economic security of an organisation, community, nation, etc. (DRII)

Damage Assessment


The process of assessing the financial / non-financial damage following a disaster. It usually refers to the assessment of damage to physical assets e.g. vital records, buildings, sites, technology to determine what can be salvaged or restored and what must be replaced. (BCI)


The process of assessing damage following a disaster to computer hardware, vital records, office facilities, etc and determining what can be salvaged or restored and must be replaced. (DRII)


The process used to appraise or determine the number of injuries and human loss, damage to public and private property, and the status of key facilities and services resulting from a natural or human-caused disaster or emergency.

Data Mirroring


A process whereby critical data is copied instantaneously to another location so that it is not lost in the event of a Business Continuity E/I/C.

Database Replication

The partial or full duplication of data from a source database to one or more destination databases. Replication may use any of a number of methodologies including mirroring or shadowing, and may be performed synchronous, asynchronous, or point-in-time depending on the technologies used, recovery point requirements, distance and connectivity to the source database, etc. Replication can if performed remotely, function as a backup for disasters and other major outages.

Declaration

A formal announcement by pre-authorized personnel that a disaster or severe outage is predicted or has occurred and that triggers pre-arranged mitigating actions (e.g. a move to alternative site). (DRII)
